Sadly, I think your experience is not an isolated incident. I've been catching a lot of local campaign rhetoric and the universal catch-phrase seems to be "we have to secure our borders!" It's fear-mongering, plain and simple. As a vote-getting strategy, it's one of the best, but in terms of actually solving anything, it completely misses the mark. But, unfortunately, that seems to be the overriding goal of politicians: get elected. Anything else that happens is incidental.
